Chair’s Message I am deeply honoured to serve as the 2024-2025 Chair of the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA).

Message du président du Conseil Je suis très honoré d’occuper les fonctions de président du conseil d’administration de l’Association canadienne de la distribution de fruits et légumes (ACDFL) pour 2024-2025. 2024 est une année importante pour l’ACDFL, car nous donnerons le coup d’envoi d’une année remplie de festivités célébrant les précieuses contributions de l’Association au secteur des fruits et légumes au cours des 100 dernières années, tant au Canada qu’à l’étranger. M’impliquer au sein de l’ACDFL et avoir grandi dans une famille de professionnels en fruits et légumes m’ont permis de constater les répercussions du travail de l’Association de même que l’évolution du secteur. L’histoire de notre entreprise familiale, Canadawide, a débuté avant sa fondation en 1983. Elle remonte à 1961 lorsque mes parents ont fondé un petit magasin de légumes à Montréal. Depuis 1983, l’entreprise a connu d’importants changements pour devenir l’un des principaux grossistes, importateurs, distributeurs et emballeurs de fruits et légumes frais conventionnels et biologiques. Au début du 20e siècle, les consommateurs dépendaient énormément des fruits et légumes cultivés localement et vendus dans les marchés de producteurs et les petits magasins comme celui fondé par mes parents. Mais au cours des dernières décennies, les innovations, les changements de politiques et les avancées technologiques ont donné aux producteurs de fruits et légumes le pouvoir d’accroître leurs récoltes, de diversifier leur clientèle et leurs fournisseurs, et de transporter leurs fruits et légumes sur de plus longues distances. La technologie a également joué un rôle majeur sur la sécurité alimentaire et la gestion de la logistique entourant les fruits et légumes frais, permettant ainsi aux vendeurs d’élargir leur offre en important des fruits et légumes de partout dans le monde. Le besoin d’importer ou d’exporter des fruits et légumes varie également en fonction des habitudes changeantes des clients. Comme plusieurs grossistes partout au pays, Canadawide importe des produits provenant de plus de 45 pays afin de répondre à la demande des Canadiens pour des fruits et légumes frais offerts à l’année. Ces changements ne représentent que quelques-unes des transformations importantes que j’ai eu la chance de vivre au cours de mes 40 années de carrière et qui ont rendu le marché des fruits et légumes du Canada dynamique, compétitif et très convoité à l’échelle mondiale. Pour sa part, l’ACDFL a été un pilier de la défense de ces enjeux au nom du secteur afin d’obtenir le soutien du gouvernement, de créer des partenariats stratégiques aux quatre coins du globe et de fournir des ressources à ses membres afin de leur permettre de faire croître leurs entreprises. À l’aube des 100 prochaines années de l’Association, je suis fier de ce qu’elle accomplira pour les générations actuelles et futures de professionnels en fruits et légumes. 2024 is an important year for CPMA as we will kick off yearlong festivities celebrating the Association’s valuable contributions to the produce industry both in Canada and globally for the past 100 years. Being involved with CPMA and growing up in a family of produce professionals has given me a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of the Association’s work and the industry’s evolution. The story of our family-owned business, Canadawide, predates its founding in 1983. It goes back to when my parents founded a greengrocer in 1961 in Montreal. Since 1983, Canadawide has undergone significant transformations to become one of Canada's leading wholesalers, importers, distributors and packers of fresh conventional and organic produce. At the beginning of the 20th century, consumers relied a lot on locally grown produce sold at farmers’ markets or local greengrocers like the one founded by my parents. Over the past decades, innovation, policy changes, and technological advancements have empowered produce growers and sellers to increase their harvests, diversify clients and suppliers, and transport their products over greater distances. Technology has also played a key role in enhancing food safety and managing fresh produce logistics allowing produce sellers to expand their offer by importing products from different parts of the world. The need to import or export produce is also driven by evolving consumer trends. Like many produce wholesalers across the country, Canadawide imports products from over 45 different countries to meet the Canadians’ demand for a year-round supply of fresh fruits and vegetables. These are some of the significant transformations I’ve experienced in my four-decade career that have made the Canadian produce marketplace dynamic, competitive, and highly coveted globally. And throughout them all, CPMA has been the pillar advocating on behalf of the industry for government support, forging strategic partnerships across the globe, and providing resources for members to grow their businesses. As the Association begins its journey into the next 100 years, I’m excited about what it will achieve for the current and future generations of produce professionals. President’s Message Thank you for being part of the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA), the voice of the fresh produce industry in Canada. Since its founding on May 19, 1925, as the Eastern Canada Fruit and Vegetable

Message du président Merci de faire partie de l’Association canadienne de la distribution de fruits et légumes (ACDFL), la voix du secteur des fruits et légumes frais au Canada. Depuis sa fondation le 19 mai 1925, alors connue sous le nom d’Eastern Canada Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association, l’organisation représente efficacement la chaîne d’approvisionnement des fruits et légumes au Canada. Alors que nous nous préparons à fêter son 100e anniversaire l’an prochain à Montréal, où l’Association a d’ailleurs été fondée, nous célébrons fièrement son histoire riche et ses accomplissements. Lors de ses humbles débuts, l’organisation et le secteur dans son ensemble ont surmonté diverses crises, comme la Seconde Guerre mondiale et des années de crise économique. Ces défis ont mis en évidence le besoin d’une entité unique pour parler et agir au nom du secteur. C’est donc ainsi que d’autres associations, dont la Western Canada Fruit Jobbers Association et trois autres associations de grossistes de Terre-Neuve, se sont jointes à la Eastern Canada Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association pour former une voix forte et efficace représentant la chaîne d’approvisionnement des fruits et légumes frais, qui est devenue l’ACDFL. Au fil des ans, l’Association a évolué en une organisation nationale de marketing et de lobbyisme comptant près de 900 sociétés membres provenant de partout au Canada et dans le monde. Une preuve de la croissance de l’Association est l’élargissement de ses programmes et services qui rehausse la compétitivité du marché des fruits et légumes du Canada sur la scène internationale. En plus de militer pour réduire le fardeau lié à la réglementation dans le secteur des fruits et légumes, l’ACDFL a continuellement innové pour répondre aux tendances émergentes au sein du secteur et à l’échelle nationale, faisant ainsi du Canada l’un des marchés les plus visés pour les entreprises. L’Association a lancé divers programmes et élaboré des ressources visant à promouvoir la sécurité alimentaire, à augmenter la consommation de fruits et légumes, à favoriser le commerce de fruits et légumes, à augmenter la connaissance et les aptitudes liées aux fruits et légumes pour les consommateurs et les membres du secteur, et bien plus. Reconnaissant l’importance d’un secteur unifié, l’ACDFL favorise l’interdépendance dans l’ensemble de la chaîne d’approvisionnement grâce à son portail communautaire en ligne et son répertoire de membres, qui offrent un solide réseau de professionnels en fruits et légumes. Une autre plateforme importante de l’ACDFL est son Expo-congrès annuel, le plus important événement au Canada touchant aux fruits et légumes frais, qui permet aux professionnels du secteur de rester en contact et soutient la croissance des entreprises membres. En résumé, l’histoire de l’ACDFL démontre la résilience, la ténacité et l’innovation dont elle a fait preuve. Ce jalon important illustre le rôle remarquable que joue l’ACDFL ainsi que les répercussions durables qu’elle a sur la chaîne d’approvisionnement alimentaire canadienne. Avec une base aussi solide en place, nous sommes impatients de voir ce que l’ACDFL accomplira au cours du prochain siècle.

Jobbers Association, the organization has effectively represented the produce supply chain in Canada. As we prepare to mark its 100th anniversary next year in Montreal, its birthplace, we look back with pride at its rich history and accomplishments. During its humble beginnings, the organization and the industry at large weathered several storms, including the Second World War and years of economic depression. These challenges underscored the need for a unique entity to speak and act on behalf of the industry. As a result, other associations, including the Western Canada Fruit Jobbers Association and three Newfoundland wholesalers associations, merged with the Eastern Canada Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association to form one strong and efficient voice for the fresh produce supply chain, which became CPMA. Over the years, the Association has evolved into a national marketing and lobbying organization with nearly 900 member companies from across Canada and the world. The growth of the Association is demonstrated by the expansion of its programs and services that enhance the competitiveness of the Canadian produce marketplace on the international stage. In addition to advocating to alleviate the regulatory burden on produce businesses, CPMA has continuously innovated to address emerging trends within the industry and the country, making Canada one of the top target markets for businesses. The Association has launched several programs and developed resources that promote food safety, increase produce consumption, facilitate the trade of fruits and vegetables, enhance produce knowledge and skills for consumers and industry members, and more. Knowing the crucial importance of keeping the industry connected, CPMA promotes interconnectedness across the supply chain through its online Community portal and this member directory, which both feature a robust network of produce professionals. Another important CPMA platform that keeps produce professionals connected and supports the growth of member businesses is the Annual Convention and Trade Show, which has become Canada’s largest fresh produce event. In summary, the story of CPMA is one of resilience, persistence, and innovation. This significant milestone illustrates the remarkable role CPMA plays and the enduring impact it has across the Canadian food supply chain. With this solid foundation in place, we are excited about what CPMA can achieve in the next century.

The Packer’s Canadian Produce Person of the Year / La personnalité canadienne de l’année pour le secteur des fruits et des légumes, choisie par The Packer This award is presented to a candidate who has made outstanding contributions in forwarding the collective interests of fresh produce marketers, and may represent any sector of the trade, allied industry or government. Since 1973, by evaluation of industry nominations from across Canada, the Canadian Produce Person of the Year is selected. This prestigious award is presented annually at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s Convention. Past honourees include: Ce prix est décerné à une personne qui, par sa remarquable contribution, a fait progresser les intérêts communs des distributeurs de fruits et de légumes frais et peut travailler au sein de n’importe quelle branche du secteur, ou au sein d’un secteur connexe ou du gouvernement. Depuis 1973, la Personnalité de l’année pour le secteur des fruits et des légumes est choisie parmi des nominations provenant des membres du secteur de partout au Canada. Il s’agit d’une personne qui, par sa remarquable contribution, a fait progresser les intérêts communs des distributeurs de fruits et de légumes frais. CPMA Lifetime Achievement Award / Prix de l’ACDFL soulignant la contribution de toute une vie In 1994, the Canadian Produce Marketing Association introduced its own award to recognize individuals who, through their dedication, had contributed a lifetime of selfless service to the produce industry in their own region, their regional industry associations, and the CPMA. Each of these individuals have played a significant role in contributing to the success of the produce industry in Canada. En 1994, l’Association canadienne de la distribution de fruits et légumes a créé un prix pour souligner le travail de personnes qui se sont dévouées, tout au cours de leur carrière, à l’avancement du secteur au sein de leur région, de leur association régionale et de l’ACDFL. Ces personnes ont toutes joué un rôle déterminant dans le succès du secteur des fruits et des légumes au Canada.

The Young Professionals Award / Prix jeune professionnel In 2022 the Mary FitzGerald Award was renamed the Young Professionals Award. En 2022, le Prix Mary FitzGerald a été renommé Prix Jeunes professionnels. The Mary FitzGerald Award is presented in partnership between Chiquita and CPMA to someone who embodies the passion and dedication to the industry displayed by its namesake, Mary FitzGerald. Mary, a CPMA Director and industry leader, passed away in October 2005. This award will be presented for years to come in her memory. Le prix Mary FitzGerald est décerné conjointement par Chiquita et l’ACDFL à une personne qui, à l’image de Mary FitzGerald, témoigne d’une passion et d’un dévouement à l’égard du secteur. CPMA Fresh Health Award / Prix Fraîcheur-santé de L’ACDFL

CPMA recognizes members who do an outstanding job of promoting CPMA’s fruit and vegetable consumption programs with the Fresh Health Award. The annual award is given out at the Convention and Trade Show. In order to win, members must effectively use the Half Your Plate messaging and materials to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables or use the Freggie™ Children’s Program to increase the knowledge and understanding of produce with children. L’ACDFL va désormais souligner les efforts de ses membres en décernant un prix Fraîcheur-santé. Le prix annuel sera décerné à l’Expo-congrès.
